The Cleveland Browns send 1,000 yard rusher Reuben Droughns to the NY Giants.
Looking for someone to replace Tiki Barber in their backfield, the NY Giants acquired running back Reuben Droughns from the Cleveland Browns. In return for Droughns, the Giants sent Cleveland wide receiver Tim Carter.
Droughns was due a big roster bonus this year, but the signing of Jamal Lewis made Droughns expendable. The Giants hope Droughns will return to his 2004 and 2005 form when he rushed for over 1,000 each season. Beset by injuries his year, Droughns only managed 758 yards.
"Reuben rushed for 1,200 yards in '04 and '05 and 750 last year," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "We think he gives us a nice veteran presence and compliments Brandon Jacobs and the rest of our running back group nicely." Droughns also has played fullback, his position in Denver for two years before his breakout season in 2004 when he gained 1,240 yards and scored a career-high six touchdowns.
Does this mean the Giants do not have faith that Brandon Jacobs can carry the load like Tiki Barber, or does this mean the Giants are merely looking for someone who can fill in and give Jacobs a breather? Either way, let's hope this helps the Giants make a better play-off run in '07.
