Angels' Matthews-I'm no Druggie

Los Angeles Angels outfielder denies taking HGH.

Denying a report broken by the Albany, NY Times-Union, Gary Matthews said he did not take HGH (human growth hormone). Matthews had been silent for 16 days about whether he had taken HGH during the 2004 season.

"Before saying anything publicly I wanted to make absolutely sure of my ground," he said. "In particular, I needed to try to learn whether anybody in authority — in or out of baseball — felt they had reason to accuse me of anything with regard to HGH. If they did, I would have to deal with that. It has taken me, and those representing me, 16 days to make certain that's not the case. And that is why it has taken longer than I would have preferred to make a public statement."

A lifetime .263 hitter, Matthews hit 11 homers in 2004, 17 homers in 2005, and a career high 19 homers in 2006. These home run totals are not exactly what you would expect from someone on HGH.

The famous steroid trio of Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire were hitting homers in the high 50's to low 70's. Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire have never tested positive for steroids or HGH, but all three have been surrounded by numerous allegations about possible drug use.

Let's face it, by baseball standards; Gary Matthews is an average player. But if major league baseball is going to give average players $52 million dollar contracts, can you blame players for trying to get an 'extra' edge?
