New NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is set to go the 'tough love' route with NFL Players.
Facing an onslaught of bad press over the actions of its NFL Players, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is set to announce harsher penalties for players 'off the field' conduct.
Gene Upshaw, head of the NFL Players Association, and many of the players and owners are supporting Goodell's hard stance on player behavior.
The NFL is arguably the most popular sport in America. Nearly everyone involved with professional football feels the recent rash of bad off the field behavior from players like Joey Porter, Adam'Pacman' Jones, and Michael Vick may start to erode away the popularity of the NFL.
Atlanta President Rich McKay said that such a change would be welcome. "We're all concerned with the things that go on off the field and how the actions of a few may affect the many. And [we] don't like that," McKay said. "So I do expect something. What it will be, I really don't know. I'm going to be very interested to hear. I know there were a number of really good exchanges in Indianapolis between the players, the union and the commissioner."
The NFL has always talked tough about player behavior, but until now most behavior policy has centered around what has happened on the field. If Roger Goodell is successful in implementing policy that deals with the off the field behavior, the NFL will become the first American sports league to deal with the antics of it employees when they are not at 'work'. Let's hope the other leagues follow suit.
